ATLANTA, GA (WABE) — State Senator Vincent Fort of Atlanta and a handful of other community activists strongly dispute Dekalb County’s recently released report on the death of Jaheem Herrera.
FORT: We object to them releasing a smear report on Jaheem trying to divert responsibility.
Released Wednesday, the 75-page report states that the 5th grader’s suicide went “beyond a simple case of bullying.”
It said Jaheem was a good student who actually was well-liked by classmates.
The report instead cited family violence as a key factor. It listed two incidents of domestic abuse between Jaheem’s mom and her live-in boyfriend. It also said Jaheem had trouble coping with the recent death of his grandmother, who he was close to.
But Masika Bermudez, Jaheem’s mom, continues to insist that her son’s suicide was the result of relentless school bullying. Full story.
