U.K. top diver Tom Daley was bullied at college

On a platform 33 feet above the pool, Tom Daley could barely hear the Kentish and Estuary shouts of support from his fellow Great Britain divers.

“You got this, Tom.”

“You can do it, mate.”

It was May, and Daley, 15, was competing at the 2009 Diving Grand Prix at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatics Complex. It was one of many warmups for the World Diving Championships in Rome, where Daley is currently competing.

Approaching his third attempt, his second-round 76.50 — a subpar score for England’s best high-diver — was still fresh in his memory.

But what most in the crowd did not know, what some of Daley’s teammates did not know, was that the diminutive, 5-5 diver from Plymouth, England, thousands of miles from home, had just been furloughed from his own personal hell — Eggbuckland Community College. Full story.
