Tort claim filed against U. of Nebraska-Lincoln in hazing case

Lincoln Journal Star
The attorney representing an alleged hazing victim at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln said Friday he also has filed a tort claim against the university regarding UNL’s failure to enforce anti-hazing rules.

Attorney Thomas White made the comment during a 10-minute hearing for a civil lawsuit filed by the alleged victim’s father. The tort claim says UNL knew or should have known about hazing activities at Sigma Chi fraternity.

Court documents say Sigma Chi pledges were subjected to a series of hazing events last fall, including paddling, forced alcohol consumption and one incident in which a pledge was sodomized by a stripper holding a sex toy.

That pledge, who was 18 at the time, “withdrew from the fraternity, has suffered humiliation, is depressed, sought counseling and is transferring away from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln,” the tort claim says.

UNL was negligent in supervising Sigma Chi, the claim says, and therefore directly contributed to the alleged victim’s injuries. It seeks unspecified damages. Full story.
